The first Penzance Festival of Art launches on 5th June ( until 20th)  bringing together the town’s plethora of artists, galleries and museums for a town-wide celebration of the very best of Penwith art, giving visitors a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the creativity and beauty of this historic coastal town.

Penzance is renowned for being one of the most vibrant and innovative artistic towns in the country, and over 1000 local artists have joined forces to showcase their art with a program packed with workshops, pop up galleries, talks, exhibitions and lectures.

Many of the town’s museums and galleries are opening their doors – including The Hypatia Trust, Penlee House, Newlyn Art Gallery, Morrab Library, The Newlyn School of Art, Space for You, the Arts Society of West Cornwall, and many more. From guided exhibitions to creative family drop-in activities, artist showcases, intriguing talks from some of the areas leading artists and more, the town will be filled with visual art from the very best of Penzance’s artists.

Highlights include the Laura Knight exhibition at Penlee House Museum & Gallery, creative workshops from The Newlyn Society of Artists and Penzance Studios, and a talk from the Tate Gallery curator Fiontan Moran to discuss the Andy Warhol Exhibition with be taking place online  on Saturday 19th June, 2021 at 6.30pm ( online tickets will be available) in association with The Newlyn School of Art. The PZ Gallery will be hosting the school’s final exhibitions, including their popular showcase from their Year One mentoring students, which includes artists from across the county.

For those looking to get involved, the school also has several courses spanning the festival including:

9-12th June - Realist Landscape outdoor course with artist Jon Doran.

13-15th June - Seascapes and Landscapes outdoor course with artist Paul Lewin. 

14-15th June - Painting Essence of Form indoor still life course with artist Jessica Cooper. 

16-19th June - Abstract Landscape outdoor course with artist Anita Reynolds. Link for festival website for people to book:

Online life drawing will also be taking place on 9th and 16th of June. These can be attended streamed from 7-9pm on the day or used any time after for a year. Link for festival website for people to book:

The school will also be hosting from Online short courses including a Modern Portrait online course and some outdoor landscape courses including Abstracting the Landscape with artist Anita Reynolds.

To top off the Festival there are two exciting competitions, firstly ‘The Festival Golden Ticket’ in association with Classic Cottages to win accommodation at a lovely harbourside cottage in Mousehole called Pender Cottage.

The prize includes four nights of self-catering stay between 8-12th, £500 to spend on art courses at Newlyn School of Art either attended in person or spent on a range of their online courses at any time. The prize also includes entry to Penlee House Gallery and Museum, Newlyn Art Gallery and the Exchange Galleries and access to the Andy Warhol talk by the Tate Gallery curator.

 

Art competition 

There will be three categories - professional, one amateur over 16 and an under 16 prize. Winners will have their work exhibited at the public gallery home of the world-famous Newlyn School of Painters home  Penlee House Gallery and Museum for the length of the festival. The prize also includes entry tickets for the winners and three accompanying people to the gallery at the time of the festival and £500 of online art courses from Newlyn School of Art for the professional winner and amateur winner, and a £100 cash prize for the under 16 winner.
